This is definitely an excursion for people who know their wine. It stood out to me compared to other Bordeaux wine tours because of the customizable part. And it really is a completely personalized experience! I don’t know wines, but my wife was talking about dry whites and fruity reds and I don’t know what. And our lovely guide Margot organized everything based on that. My wife loved it! They obviously know their stuff. The entire experience, the pick-up, private guide, private group - everything was a very high level of service!!
The wines were delicious! But even besides the wine tastings, it was a great day. I really liked visiting the town - super cute with all the narrow streets and old buildings. Our guide was also great. She knew a lot about the place, and was a great storyteller. I like how they picked out the wineries based on what we wanted to drink as well. Was a great personal touch. My favorite was the third Bordeaux vineyard we saw - I think it was Chateau Coutet? The owners were super friendly, they showed us the wine cellar and everything.

The region is very well known for its strict wine-making traditions. Bordeaux is divided into several official AOC wine areas, and here in the Saint-Émilion region, the main appellation is the Saint-Émilion AOC. This appellation mainly uses Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. As your driver will tell you, Merlot is by far the most common grape in this area.

The village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there are plenty of landmarks to see. Your guide will take you to the ‘Monolithic Church’ of Saint-Émilion. It's one of the largest underground churches in Europe and is carved out of limestone. If you like, you can even enter it. You’ll also see the Tour du Roy, which is a limestone tower from the 13th century.
